The silence of the condo was deafening, broken only by the frantic beating of my heart. Dana’s note mocked me from the kitchen counter, its saccharine message dripping with malice. My mind raced, trying to understand the depth of her animosity. My mother’s passing had been difficult enough, and now this woman, this interloper, was trying to erase me from my father’s life completely. I refused to let her win. Panic threatened to overwhelm me, but I forced myself to take deep breaths and think rationally. Dana may have taken my phone, keys, and shoes, but she couldn’t take my knowledge of the condo. Years ago, when my dad first bought the place, he’d shown me the emergency exit and the code to disarm the alarm. He’d also, in a moment of fatherly over-preparedness, helped me hide a spare key in a magnetic box behind a loose brick on the balcony. It was meant for emergencies, and this, undeniably, qualified.
With renewed determination, I walked calmly to the balcony door. It was locked, but I remembered the spare key location. My fingers trembled as I located the loose brick, my heart pounding with each second that ticked by. Finally, I felt the familiar cold metal of the key. Success! I carefully unlocked the door and stepped onto the balcony, scanning the surroundings for any sign of Dana or her accomplices.
The magnetic box was still there, hidden in plain sight. I retrieved the spare key, my hands shaking with a mix of adrenaline and righteous anger. I unlocked the balcony door, and slipped back inside. Now, to the alarm panel. My fingers flew across the keypad, entering the code my dad had entrusted to me years ago. The red light blinked green, and the system disarmed. I was free.
But I wasn’t just going to attend the wedding. I was going to expose Dana for the manipulative, vindictive person she truly was. I knew my dad was blinded by her charm, still grieving my mother and desperate for companionship. He needed to see her true colors before he made the biggest mistake of his life. The wedding was at a fancy hotel downtown. I knew I had to get there fast.
I found an old pair of sneakers in the back of the closet, slightly too big but wearable. I slipped out of the condo, hailed a cab, and gave the driver the address of the hotel. As the cab sped through the city streets, I formulated my plan. I wouldn’t make a scene or cause a disruption during the ceremony. Instead, I would gather evidence, undeniable proof of Dana’s cruelty, and present it to my father privately.
Arriving at the hotel, I saw guests milling about, dressed in their finest attire. The wedding was clearly about to begin. I spotted a waiter carrying a tray of champagne and discreetly grabbed a glass, needing something to calm my nerves. I found my dad’s best friend, Mark, and asked him to stall the ceremony. I explained, quickly and quietly, what had happened, and asked him to keep my father away from the altar for as long as possible. Mark, always a loyal friend, looked shocked but agreed to help. He knew Dana wasn’t a good fit for my dad.
I marched straight to the bridal suite. The door was unlocked. Inside, I found Dana putting the finishing touches on her makeup. Her face was radiant, but her eyes held a cold, calculating glint. I held up my phone, already recording. “Dana,” I said, my voice trembling with rage, “I know what you did.” I played a recording of her telling her friend about locking me in. Her face paled as she realized her scheme had been exposed. I called my dad into the room, he arrived with Mark. Dana tried to lie her way out of it, but my dad saw the truth in her eyes. The wedding was off.
