After 38 years of marriage, my husband and I divorced — at his funeral, a stranger told me: “YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOUR HUSBAND DID FOR YOU!” Richard and I had known each other since college and started dating during our freshman year. Both of us were 20 when we married. For a long time, we were happy. There were two children and five grandchildren. Richard was caring, cheerful, and kind. Then he changed completely. I do not know what happened, but he became distant and withdrawn. He often appeared sad and serious. On some nights, he would not sleep in our bedroom, choosing instead to sleep in the living room and lock the door. When asked what was wrong, he would shut down and say it was stress at work.
This continued for six months. One evening, he came home, sat at the kitchen table, and would not even look at me. He said nervously: “I cheated on you with another woman. I’m sorry. I can’t lie to you anymore.” After those words, *breathing stopped*.

She seemed calm but very serious. After the service, when most people had already left, I approached her and asked how she knew Richard. The woman grew visibly nervous and clearly did not want to answer, but I pressed her.
