I defended a veteran who was being mocked in a store — the next day, a man in an expensive suit came to me and said, “WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT WHAT YOU DID.” I worked as a security guard at a small grocery store. Most nights were uneventful, and I counted the hours until I could be home with my wife and son. That night, I noticed him. A veteran, probably about 40, stood at the register. He looked older than his years, wearing a faded military jacket and matching pants. He was buying just a carton of milk, carefully counting coins to pay. A long line had formed behind him. The man directly behind him appeared the most irritated. He held the hand of a five-year-old boy.
“What a poor loser,” he muttered under his breath. I watched the veteran’s ears flush with embarrassment, and he accidentally dropped his coins. He bent to pick them up. “Dad, why is that man so poor?” the kid asked. The man replied, “Not everyone is smart. Watch people like that so you know how not to end up like them.” *I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.*
I could not stand it any longer. I stepped up to the register and told the veteran, “I’ll pay.” Along with the milk, I bought him coffee, mac ‘n’ cheese, and chicken tenders. *I just wanted to help him.*
The veteran seemed on the verge of tears. He grabbed my hands and thanked me. “Don’t thank me. It’s the least I can do for your service,” I said. Then I knelt down to the child.
“Remember, kid. There’s no shame in any job. Shame lies in not working—or in mocking people who are doing their best to earn a living.” Unsurprisingly, that man filed a major complaint against me, and the store fined me. *I knew there would be repercussions.*
I felt no regret. I had stood up for that veteran, and it made my chest feel lighter. The following day I was back on duty when a stranger approached.
He wore an expensive suit, was clean-shaven, and had polished leather shoes. His expression was deadly serious. “Do we know each other, sir?” I asked. “We need to talk about what you did to this veteran yesterday.” I was so stunned I could not find words.
“Come with me,” he said. ⬇️⬇️⬇️
