Mia, my younger sister, and I were raised in an orphanage, never knowing our biological parents. We only had each other, until the day everything changed. At eight years old, a family chose to adopt me, unwilling to take both of us. I promised Mia I’d find her, but the system separated us, leaving me heartbroken. As an adult, I tirelessly searched for Mia, but the orphanage only revealed she’d been adopted and her name changed. Every search ended in disappointment, a constant reminder of my broken promise. Thirty-two years passed, and I built a life, a family, and a career, yet Mia remained in my thoughts, an ache in my heart.
Last week, a work trip took me to another city. After a long day, I stepped into a grocery store to grab a few things. I noticed a little girl, around nine or ten, reaching for a pack of cookies. My heart skipped a beat when I saw the bracelet on her wrist.
I recognized it instantly. Before our separation, Mia and I made friendship bracelets. I had braided one from thread, using specific colors and a unique, crooked knot. It was undeniably the same bracelet I had given to her so many years ago. I had to know more.
I leaned closer and gently asked, “Sweetheart, you have such a beautiful bracelet. Did you make it yourself?” She smiled, her eyes sparkling, and replied, “No, my mom gave it to me. It used to be hers, and then she gave it to me. She said it’s very special and that I mustn’t lose it.”
My voice trembled as I asked, “Sweetheart, is your mom with you?” She nodded and pointed to the next aisle, saying, “Yes, that’s my mom over there.” My heart pounded in my chest as I watched the girl’s mother walk toward us. Was this really happening? Could it be?
As the woman approached, her face came into view, and I gasped. It wasn’t Mia. This woman was a stranger. But as the girl’s mother got closer, another woman appeared behind her… It was **MY MOTHER**! The biological mother I thought I’d never meet. She had been searching for us this whole time, and Mia was her adopted daughter! [ “THE WOMAN WAS THE BIOLOGICAL MOTHER WHO HAD GIVEN US UP” ].
