He Lied About Soccer, But What I Found… Broke Me

My husband, Mark, and our son, Ethan, who just turned thirteen, have always had a uniquely close relationship. It’s always been a ‘boys will be boys’ kind of thing, filled with shared interests and inside jokes that often left me on the periphery. I never begrudged it; in fact, I encouraged it. I thought it was wonderful that they had such a strong bond, something I felt I lacked with both of them, especially as Ethan grew older. I chalked it up to the natural evolution of family dynamics—dads and sons often find common ground as sons mature. For the past six months, a new ritual had solidified their connection even further: Friday night “soccer practice.” Or, at least, that’s what I believed. Mark would pack a bag for Ethan, complete with his soccer cleats and water bottle, and off they would go, promising to return a couple of hours later, sweaty and invigorated. I’d wave them off, happy that Ethan was engaging in a healthy activity and that Mark was so involved in his son’s life. Little did I know that beneath this veneer of normalcy, a web of deceit was slowly being woven. A sickening, twisted thing was being prepared right under my nose, and I, like a naive fool, was simply letting it happen.

One Friday, feeling particularly domestic, I decided to surprise them with their favorite post-practice treat: homemade chocolate chip cookies and ice-cold lemonade. I carefully packed everything into a basket and drove to the local soccer field, picturing their faces lighting up with joy and appreciation. As I approached the field, I scanned the area, expecting to see Ethan running drills or Mark enthusiastically cheering from the sidelines. But the scene that greeted me was far from what I had imagined. The field was mostly empty, save for a few scattered children kicking a ball around aimlessly. There was no sign of Mark or Ethan anywhere. Puzzled, I approached one of the coaches, a young man with a friendly demeanor, and asked if he had seen them. “Mark and Ethan? I don’t think so,” he replied, furrowing his brow. “Are you sure they practice here? I’ve never seen them before.” His words struck me like a physical blow. My heart began to pound in my chest, and a cold wave of dread washed over me. I thanked the coach and hurried back to my car, my mind racing with unanswered questions and unsettling possibilities.

That evening, as Mark and Ethan walked through the door, flushed and seemingly tired from their “practice,” I couldn’t bring myself to confront them immediately. I decided to play it cool, to gather more information before revealing my suspicions. During dinner, I casually asked, “How was practice?” Ethan, without missing a beat, replied, “Great! As always!” Mark chimed in, adding a few fabricated details about a particularly challenging drill. Their nonchalant demeanor only fueled my suspicion. I felt a knot tightening in my stomach, a mix of anger, betrayal, and disbelief. I resolved to uncover the truth, no matter how painful it might be. I knew, in my heart, that something was terribly wrong, and I couldn’t rest until I knew what they were hiding.

The following Friday, I feigned a headache and told Mark that I wouldn’t be able to make dinner. I watched as they went through their usual routine, packing the soccer bag and heading out the door. As soon as they were out of sight, I grabbed my keys and followed them. I kept a safe distance, careful not to arouse suspicion, as they drove to the other side of town. They arrived at a desolate location outside the city, far from any soccer fields or recreational facilities. My heart started hammering in my chest as they parked. This was when my life would fall apart, and I had the strangest feeling that I could not pull myself away from it.

They pulled into a **private, secluded property**, and I barely managed to keep my distance. I parked a safe distance away, and watched them get out of the car. It looked almost like an abandoned office park, but there was a small building that looked open. The doors were open, and my husband and son were laughing. The sound made me feel sick. What was this place? Why did they come here? I felt terrified, anxious, and betrayed. But nothing could have prepared me for what I saw next.

I slowly approached, walking with a trembling gait, ready for whatever would come next. I peered inside the building. The first thing I saw was **dozens of computers** on long tables. My husband and son were laughing as they sat down at two of the computers. They both put on headsets and began to speak and laugh with other people. As I looked around, I saw that other kids were here with their fathers, all playing some kind of video game. There were energy drinks and junk food everywhere. This wasn’t soccer practice! This was an **esports gaming arena**. They had been **lying to me for months**! This was their big secret.

I barged in, tears streaming down my face. “What is the meaning of this?” I screamed. Both Mark and Ethan turned towards me, their faces pale with shock. “We can explain!” Mark stuttered. I didn’t want to hear their excuses. The betrayal cut deep. What happened next was even more shocking. Ethan started crying, but the tears weren’t the tears of guilt, but the tears of shame. I may never understand them again.
