We went on vacation, leaving my in-laws to watch over my father. My dad is a sweet, quiet man, but he’s been battling some health issues, so we wanted someone responsible to stay with him in his home. Big mistake. Huge. From the moment we left, it was a disaster. They immediately trashed his meticulously planned daily routine, which is vital for his well-being. They treated his house like a hotel, mooching off his groceries, leaving messes everywhere, and generally making themselves entirely too comfortable. They were constantly eating all of his favorite snacks, leaving empty wrappers strewn about, and generally acting like they were on some all-expenses-paid vacation. The worst part? They completely took over the TV, watching whatever reality show garbage they could find and complaining loudly when my dad politely asked if he could watch the news. It was disrespectful and infuriating, and I got daily updates from my increasingly distressed father. Then came the comment that made my blood boil.

One evening, my dad overheard them talking about him. They were saying how much of a burden he was and how he didn’t need such a big house at his age. Apparently they think he should be stuck in one room! They said, [“Hey, you don’t need a whole house! A nursing home will be right for you. GET DOWN TO EARTH.”] I couldn’t believe the audacity. This was his home, the place where he raised his family and made countless memories. Who were they to decide what was best for him?
My dad, being the incredibly polite and non-confrontational man that he is, didn’t argue. He simply nodded, smiled politely, and took it all in. I was furious when he told me what they said, but he just chuckled softly. He said he had a plan. This is where the story takes a turn. After hearing their unsolicited advice, he dropped a bomb on them, a perfectly calculated revenge.
The next morning, he approached my in-laws with a twinkle in his eye. He said, “You know what? You’re right. Maybe it’s time I moved out. A smaller place might be easier to manage.” He then asked them, with a completely straight face, “Could you help me pack my things?” Oh, they happily agreed! You could see the smug satisfaction on their faces. They thought they had finally convinced him to downsize, to get out of their way.
They didn’t realize they were walking right into a trap. Two days later, the doorbell rang. It was a moving company. My dad, with a mischievous grin, announced that he was moving… into their house! He had signed a contract for long term care and their house was being remodeled to provide the best care for him! Apparently, he was going to be dependent on them for the rest of their lives! They were speechless, utterly dumbfounded. The look on their faces was priceless.
It turns out, my dad had been planning this for weeks. He knew they were eager to get rid of him, and he used their own words against them. Now, they are stuck taking care of him, 24/7. They completely renovated their house with his money. And as for my dad? He is living his best life, enjoying the peace of mind that comes with knowing he is safe and cared for… and that his in-laws are getting exactly what they deserve.
