My husband, Michael, and I planned to be together for the birth of our first child. We had everything planned – down to the music and the tiny hat he’d put on our baby. We spent months carefully decorating the nursery, picking out the perfect name, and attending every single birthing class offered at the hospital. I envisioned Michael holding my hand through every contraction, whispering words of encouragement, and beaming with pride as he held our newborn daughter for the very first time. We were a team, ready to face the challenges of parenthood together. Or so I thought. But when our baby, Emily, was born, he was a **NO-SHOW**. The nurses kept trying to reassure me, saying he was probably just delayed. But deep down, I knew something was wrong. Every hour that passed felt like an eternity. I tried calling him repeatedly, but his phone went straight to voicemail each time. Panic started to set in. Where was he? Was he okay? Had something terrible happened? The joy of welcoming my daughter into the world was quickly overshadowed by a growing sense of dread and uncertainty.

After two days in the hospital, I went home with Emily, trying to convince myself that there was some reasonable explanation. Maybe work? An accident? But nothing could’ve prepared me for what I found. The house was dead silent. I ran upstairs to the nursery, thinking he might be there preparing a surprise. But the room was practically empty. Just the crib was left, with a note inside scrawled in Michael’s handwriting: “I LOVE YOU AND OUR BABY. BUT I HAVE TO LEAVE FOREVER. ASK YOUR MOM WHY SHE DID THIS TO ME.”
I was in shock. “Mom!” I shouted, running downstairs, clutching the note in one hand as I held Emily. I found her in the living room, her face pale and drawn. Before I could even ask a question, she blurted out the truth: she had had an affair with Michael years ago, before I even met him. [ “HE BELIEVED EMILY WAS HIS” ].
She revealed that Michael was in deep debt to some unsavory people, and she had been secretly helping him with payments over the past few years. The debt was escalating, and she felt trapped. She confessed that she had told Michael that he needed to leave and never come back, not wanting me and Emily to be involved in that mess.
I was furious and heartbroken. How could she do this? I kicked her out of the house and have not spoken to her since. Michael has been unreachable. I filed for divorce. My life has been turned upside down. [ “I AM RAISING EMILY ALONE” ].
I am still trying to pick up the pieces and provide the best life for my daughter. I don’t know if I will ever fully understand or forgive my mother and Michael for their betrayal. Some days are harder than others, but Emily’s smiles keep me going. She is my everything. And I will do anything to protect her from the pain that I have experienced.
