Part 1

I had spent the entire morning making sure my husband would not see us at the airport terminal because it was supposed to be a surprise. Our seven year old son, Leo, had never been a passenger on one of his father’s flights, and I desperately wanted to change that experience for him.
I wanted Leo to feel the sudden excitement of seeing his dad working in the air, and then we would happily surprise him after landing at our destination. The whole plan was working completely smoothly until my husband made an unexpected announcement over the cabin speakers. In the space of just a few seconds, the bright excitement on my son’s face vanished into complete confusion.
My husband, Brandon, had been flying commercial aircraft for nearly nine years without taking us along. Somehow, during that entire timeframe, our young son had never once stepped inside a plane operated by his father. Leo always hated that fact and felt left out whenever Brandon packed his bag for work. Every time Brandon grabbed his overnight suit, Leo followed him around the bedrooms asking a dozen endless questions.
“Are you flying the big plane today, Dad?” Leo asked as he watched him pack his clothes carefully.
“Not today, buddy, but sometimes I get to fly the big ones,” Brandon replied with a soft laugh.
“Do the passengers on board know that you are my dad?” Leo asked, leaning against the wooden door frame.
“Not really, buddy, they just know I am their captain for the flight,” Brandon said gently.
“Why don’t they know about us?” Leo pressed, folding his arms across his small chest.
“Maybe some of them will recognize you one day,” Brandon chuckled while pulling his suitcase zipper shut.
I had listened to those exact conversations so many times over the years that I decided it was time to turn that wish into reality. A few weeks prior, Brandon mentioned that he had a short Saturday assignment flying down to Atlanta. He was scheduled to fly there, stay a couple hours between flights, and then return home that very evening. The moment he explained his schedule to me, a sudden fun plan popped straight into my head. It seemed completely harmless and sweet at the time. I bought two tickets on his specific flight and kept the entire transaction a total secret.
When I finally revealed the surprise trip to Leo, he practically jumped up and down from sheer excitement.
“We are really going to surprise Dad on his plane?” Leo cheered, his eyes growing wide with delight.
“Yes, but only after we land safely in Atlanta,” I instructed him with a warm smile.
“Can I walk into the cockpit to see him?” Leo asked eagerly.
“If the flight attendants say it is alright after we park,” I answered softly.
“Can I wear my special pilot shirt right now?” Leo asked as he ran toward his closet.
“Definitely not, because he will spot you from miles away if you wear that shirt,” I laughed.
Leo took the strict secrecy far more seriously than anything he had ever handled before in his life. He carefully packed his favorite noise headphones, two packs of sweet gummy bears, and a small plastic airplane toy inside his backpack. He even spent an hour drawing a colorful picture of Brandon standing proudly right in front of a giant jetliner. Across the upper margin of the paper, he wrote in big uneven letters that his father was the best pilot ever. I looked at his sweet drawing and thought the entire day was going to be absolutely perfect.
Part 2
The busy terminal almost ruined everything before we could even reach our flight gate. We were walking toward the main security area when Leo suddenly grabbed my coat sleeve with force.
“Mom, look over there right now!” Leo whispered loudly while pointing his hand down the hallway.
I followed his pointing finger and felt my stomach instantly drop into a cold knot. Brandon was walking across the terminal floor less than thirty feet away from where we were standing. He was wearing his neat pilot uniform while rolling his black flight bag behind him with steady steps. I immediately grabbed Leo by his arm and pulled him inside a small airport gift shop. We hid right behind a big metal rack of heavy hoodies while I pretended to look closely at tiny refrigerator magnets.
“This is so awesome, Mom,” Leo whispered while shaking with quiet laughter beside me.
“You are enjoying this hidden game way too much,” I whispered back, holding my breath as Brandon passed.
Once Brandon turned the far corner and completely disappeared from view, we quickly continued walking toward our designated departure gate. I had not felt that lighthearted and excited in many long months. Looking back now, I deeply hate how clearly I remember that brief feeling of happiness. At that moment, I had no idea what kind of painful disaster was waiting for us.
We boarded near the back end of the line because I did not want Leo jumping around near the gate area where Brandon might spot him. Our seats were located toward the rear section of the airplane cabin. Leo immediately pushed his head against the thick glass window to look at the ground crew below.
“Do you think Dad knows we are sitting back here?” Leo asked with a giant smile.
“There is no chance he knows,” I reassured him while placing our bags under the front seat.
“What if I just whisper it to one flight attendant?” Leo bargained, grinning up at me.
“No, we cannot do that because it will ruin the big surprise,” I replied with a quick shake of my head.
“Not even to just one flight attendant?” Leo begged softly.
“Leo, please sit still and keep the secret,” I reminded him gently as he zipped his mouth shut.
A few minutes later, the flight crew closed the heavy front door of the aircraft securely. I leaned over to help Leo fasten his seat belt tight across his waist. Then the overhead speakers made a bright clicking sound, and Brandon’s clear voice filled the entire passenger room. Leo’s face immediately lit up with bright pride.
“Mom, that is Dad talking right now!” Leo shouted in a sweet low whisper.
“I know it is, sweetheart,” I replied happily.
I quickly pulled my phone out of my purse and started recording a video of Leo listening to his father. Brandon delivered the standard greeting announcement to all the passengers on board. He mentioned the bright weather conditions waiting for us in Atlanta and gave an accurate estimate of our total flight time. Then he added a funny joke about bringing everyone to the destination before anyone could finish eating a bad terminal sandwich. Leo giggled loudly in his seat while I smiled warmly at the ceiling. Everything was going exactly as I had spent weeks dreaming it would go.
Part 3
Then Brandon suddenly stopped speaking in the middle of his sentence. It was not the short ordinary pause a pilot takes to check flight papers or listen to a coworker in the cockpit. This particular silence lasted for a very long time, and the entire cabin grew remarkably quiet. When he finally spoke through the microphone again, his tone of voice had completely shifted into something heavy.
“Actually, everyone, before we push back from the gate, I would like to say something a bit unusual today,” Brandon announced over the speakers.
My smile immediately faded away, and my hands froze completely in the air. I slowly lowered my recording phone down to my lap as anxiety washed over me. Leo squeezed my fingers with his small hand as he sensed the mood shift.
“There is someone extremely special on board this flight today,” Brandon continued over the cabin speakers. “Someone who has changed my entire life in ways I never thought possible.”
Leo turned his head toward me so fast that his soft headphones slid right off his ears onto his seat.
“It is me, Mom!” Leo gasped with extreme excitement. “I think Dad somehow knows we are sitting in the back!”
For half a second, I genuinely thought the exact same thing and felt a sudden wave of relief. My heart beat fast with joy, and I even started to smile again at my bright son. But then Brandon spoke a woman’s name clearly into the microphone.
“Laila, I know I have said these words to you in private, but I wanted to announce it somewhere that truly means everything to me now that we are ready,” Brandon said softly.
I completely stopped smiling as my body went entirely cold and numb. Leo stared up at my frozen face with deep confusion in his eyes.
“You are carrying our child, and I cannot wait for the brand new life that we are building together,” Brandon announced proudly to the entire aircraft.
I could not even feel myself breathing air into my chest as my husband kept talking over the system.
“I know the last few months have been very complicated for us, but I cannot wait until the day I can finally call you my wife,” Brandon added.
I remember my young son looking up at me with absolute confusion written across his brow. I remember a woman sitting directly across the aisle smiling warmly as if she were watching a wonderful movie proposal. I remember my hands holding my phone, which was still recording every single word he said. And right in that terrible moment, I suddenly remembered who Laila was.
Part 4
Six months before that terrible flight, a young woman had knocked on our front door on a quiet afternoon. I had been sitting at the dining room table working on a painted canvas when the doorbell rang loudly. When I opened the front door, she was standing on our porch crying heavily with thick black makeup running down her face.
“Is Brandon home right now?” she asked, wiping her wet cheeks with her sleeve.
“No, he is working at the airport today,” I answered, feeling confused by her sudden appearance.
Her face immediately fell, and she looked down at the ground with a deep sigh.
“I really need to talk to him about something important,” she murmured softly.
“Who are you?” I asked, stepping closer to the door frame to look at her clearly.
“My name is Laila,” she replied weakly, refusing to make direct eye contact with me.
I waited standing on the porch for her to explain why she had come to my family home, but she said nothing else.
“Do you want to leave a message for him?” I offered gently, seeing how upset she appeared to be.
“No, never mind, I should not have come here,” she stuttered nervously.
“Is there something wrong that I can help with?” I asked, feeling genuine concern for her distress.
“No, I made a mistake by coming here today,” she said before turning around and walking quickly down our driveway.
That exact night, I asked Brandon about the unknown woman who had shown up crying on our porch. He went completely still for a quick second, making the subtle pause people make when they hear an unexpected name. Then he recovered his composure and acted completely casual about the situation.
“Laila works for the airline company,” Brandon claimed smoothly while hanging up his uniform shirt.
“Why was she crying on our front steps while looking for you?” I asked, watching his face closely.
“She is having some severe workplace issues right now, and I have been helping her navigate them,” Brandon replied without looking back at me.
“What kind of issues is she dealing with?” I pressed, wanting a clear explanation.
“It involves a misconduct dispute with another pilot, and the situation is very complicated,” Brandon answered casually.
I remember thinking at the time that something about his calm explanation felt slightly off. But Brandon had never given me any actual reason to suspect he was being unfaithful to our family. There were no strange text messages on his phone, no unexplained nights away from home beyond his normal work schedule, and no hidden charges on our bank accounts. There was simply nothing tangible that I could point at and identify as real proof of betrayal. Laila never returned to our house, her name was never mentioned again, and I eventually convinced myself that I was just being silly and paranoid.
Part 5
Now I was sitting inside my husband’s airplane, forced to listen as he announced to a cabin full of complete strangers that another woman was pregnant with his baby. I wanted to go back in time and scream at the naive version of myself who had let that strange afternoon visit fade away so easily.
Brandon finally finished his long speech, and scattered applause broke out through the plane cabin. A passenger sitting near the front row even cheered loudly in celebration of the romantic moment.
“Mom, what does Dad mean by that?” Leo asked softly, his small voice trembling with confusion.
I quickly turned off my phone camera and put the device deep inside my purse.
“We are going to talk about all of this later, sweetheart,” I answered as calmly as I could manage.
“Who is Laila?” Leo insisted, clutching his small hands together in his lap.
“We will talk later, baby,” I repeated, trying desperately to keep my own voice steady.
“Why did Dad say that Laila is going to be his new wife?” Leo asked as his small voice broke completely.
That was the exact moment I stopped focusing on my own pain and centered my mind entirely on my child. Whatever terrible harm Brandon had inflicted on me, our innocent seven year old son had just absorbed the exact same blow. I grabbed both of Leo’s hands and pulled him close to my face.
“Look at me, Leo,” I instructed softly as tears began pooling inside his bright eyes.
“Is Dad leaving our family forever?” Leo sobbed quiet tears that ran down his young cheeks.
“It does not matter what is happening right now, honey,” I lied gently to protect him. “I just need you to focus on enjoying our flight to the city.”
“But you are his real wife, Mom,” Leo cried softly as he pressed his head against my sweater.
I pulled him tight against my chest while staring blindly at the back of the seat in front of us. I wanted to scream out loud, and I wanted to march straight down the aisle into the cockpit to demand an immediate explanation from Brandon. Instead, I stayed firmly in my passenger seat because the plane was pushing back from the gate and my son desperately needed me to stay grounded.
The flight lasted less than two hours, but it felt like ten painful days inside my head. Leo barely touched his favorite gummy bears, and the colorful drawing he had spent hours creating for Brandon remained folded up hidden inside his backpack. When the plane finally touched down in Atlanta, we waited in our seats until almost all the other passengers had walked out. I had no idea what I was going to say to my husband, but I knew with absolute certainty that I was not leaving the airport without confronting him face to face.
Part 6
We walked out of the jet bridge into the bright terminal building and began searching the crowded concourse. Then I spotted Brandon standing right near the glass entrance of an exclusive airline lounge. Laila was standing directly beside him, looking completely different from the broken woman who had wept on my porch six months prior. Her dark hair was styled, her clothing looked expensive, and there was no hiding her rounded pregnant stomach. One of her hands rested gently over her belly as she offered Brandon a warm smile.
Then Laila shifted her eyes and noticed Leo and me walking directly toward them across the terminal floor. Her warm smile vanished instantly into a guarded expression, and Brandon quickly followed her nervous gaze. The natural color completely drained from my husband’s face as his eyes darted from my cold expression down to our young son.
“Megan?” Brandon gasped out loud as we finally came to a complete stop right in front of him.
Leo began crying silently again, hiding half his face behind my jacket.
“Dad, what is going on here?” Leo asked with a shaking voice.
Brandon took one quick step forward, his hands trembling slightly at his sides.
“What on earth are you two doing on this flight today?” Brandon asked, looking completely stunned.
For a brief second, I almost burst into a bitter laugh right in his face.
“We bought tickets to surprise you for your work trip,” I answered coldly, keeping my posture completely straight.
Brandon closed his eyes tightly and let out a heavy breath of air. Laila did not look embarrassed or ashamed by the confrontation at all. If anything, she looked relieved that the secret was finally out in the open.
I pointed my finger directly at her and looked Brandon straight in the eyes.
“Is this not the exact same Laila who came to our house crying six months ago?” I demanded loudly.
Brandon looked nervously around the busy hallway to see if passengers were watching us.
“Can we please not do this right here in public?” Brandon pleaded under his breath.
“You told me she was just a struggling coworker at the airline,” I reminded him with a bitter tone.
“Megan, this public hallway is really not the right place for this discussion,” Brandon insisted firmly.
“No, you just used an airplane sound system to announce to strangers that she is carrying your baby and that you plan to marry her,” I countered loudly. “You can answer my questions right here in public.”
Laila folded her arms across her chest and stepped closer to Brandon’s side.
“At least she knows the truth now, Brandon,” Laila interjected calmly.
I turned my gaze toward her. “What did you just say to me?”
“I said that at least you know what is going on now instead of living a lie,” Laila stated directly without blinking.
I took a sharp step toward her, but Brandon immediately moved his body directly between us.
“You need to grab your things and leave right now, Megan,” Brandon said, putting his hands up to block me.
“Get out of my way, Brandon,” I said through clenched teeth.
“Megan, look at Leo standing right there beside you,” Brandon argued sternly. “Think about your own son before you cause a scene in an airport.”
I laughed loudly at the complete hypocrisy of his words. “Now you suddenly care about what Leo sees and hears?”
Brandon’s face tightened with anger, but he quickly looked down at our sobbing child. Leo was clutching my hand so tightly that his knuckles were turning white.
“Buddy, I can explain everything to you,” Brandon tried to say gently, reaching his hand toward him. “Just not right at this moment.”
Leo actively flinched away from his reach and hid his face completely behind my coat. Something in Brandon’s confident demeanor visibly broke when he saw his son reject him so completely.
“How long has this affair actually been going on behind my back?” I asked, forcing myself to ask the question I dreaded most.
Brandon glanced nervously at Laila before turning his eyes back to my face.
“It has been going on for almost a full year,” Brandon admitted in a low voice.
I felt so dizzy that I had to plant my feet firmly on the ground to stay upright.
“When were you ever planning on telling me the truth?” I asked quietly.
“I was honestly trying to find the right time to handle it,” Brandon answered while rubbing his forehead nervously.
“The right time to inform your wife that you got another woman pregnant?” I snapped back.
“No, I was looking for the right time to hand you the formal papers,” Brandon corrected flatly.
For a long moment, my brain could not even process the meaning of his words.
“What papers are you talking about?” I asked.
“The official divorce papers,” Brandon stated clearly.
Part 7
Leo began sobbing loudly behind my back as those heavy words hung in the air between us. Brandon’s face filled with panic as he realized our child had heard every word about the destruction of our family. I immediately crouched down on the floor beside Leo and placed my hands on his small shoulders.
“Leo, sweetie, put your heavy headphones on right now,” I instructed gently.
“I don’t want to put them on, Mom!” Leo cried out, wiping his wet face with his sleeve.
“Please do it for me right now, baby,” I begged softly until he finally placed the soft cushions over his ears.
I stood back up to face Brandon, who was looking completely wrecked as travelers walked past us in the concourse.
“You were really planning to just serve me divorce papers out of nowhere?” I asked, my voice trembling with deep hurt.
“I truly did not want any of this to happen in this terrible way,” Brandon claimed smoothly.
“Then how exactly did you want it to happen?” I asked, folding my arms tightly.
“I wanted us to sit down and talk about everything privately at home,” Brandon replied softly.
Laila stepped forward and interrupted our conversation again with a sharp tone.
“Brandon and I love each other very much, Megan,” Laila stated plainly. “We are having a child together, he wants to build a new life with me, and dragging this broken marriage out is not helping anyone involved.”
I stared at Brandon with pure disbelief. “Is that really what you think about us too?”
Brandon did not answer immediately, but after a few painful seconds of silence, he slowly nodded his head.
“Our marriage has honestly been completely over for a long time now, Megan,” Brandon said quietly.
That statement came as a absolute shock to my system. Brandon and I had eaten a peaceful dinner together at our kitchen table on Thursday evening. We had held hands while watching a movie in bed on Friday night, and he had kissed me gently on the lips when he left the house that very morning. Apparently, my entire marriage had ended months ago without anyone bothering to inform me.
“We can still figure out how to be great co parents to Leo,” Brandon added, trying to sound reasonable.
Leo must have seen his father move, because he pulled one side of his headphones off his ear and looked up at us.
“Are you leaving Mom and me forever, Dad?” Leo asked in a small, broken voice.
Brandon took a quick step toward our son. “Leo, buddy, listen to me…”
“Don’t touch me right now!” Leo yelled loudly, stepping backward away from his father’s outstretched hand.
Brandon froze in his tracks, looking completely stunned by his son’s reaction. I knew right then that it was time to end the confrontation immediately. I picked up our heavy shoulder bags and grabbed Leo’s small hand tightly in mine.
“We are going home right now,” I said firmly, turning my back on both of them.
“Please let me sit down and explain things properly to him first,” Brandon called out after us.
“You already explained everything he needs to know,” I replied without stopping.
I took Leo downstairs to the main concourse level and bought him a large cup of chocolate ice cream because I honestly had no idea how else to comfort a broken heart in an airport. He took three small bites with his spoon before setting the paper cup down on the table.
“Does Dad love that lady more than he loves us now?” Leo asked softly, looking up at me with tears in his eyes.
I nearly broke down sobbing right there in the middle of the crowded food court, but I forced my inner pain down and focused on being strong for my child.
“Your dad loving someone else does not mean he ever stopped loving you, Leo,” I explained carefully, choosing every word with extreme caution.
“What about you, Mom?” Leo asked, searching my face for answers.
I refused to lie to my son about the reality of the situation. “I think your dad made choices that hurt me very badly, but that is between him and me.”
His lower lip trembled violently. “Are the two of us still going to be a real family?”
“You and I will always be a real family, sweetie,” I promised him, squeezing his hands across the small table.
“How can we still be a family without Dad?” Leo asked softly.
“Families can change their shape and still be strong families,” I answered gently, wondering where those calm words were even coming from inside my shattered mind.
Part 8
We flew back home that very evening, and early the next morning, I called a family lawyer named Sophia to schedule an urgent consultation. Sophia listened quietly to my entire story without interrupting me once while taking detailed notes on her desk pad. When I finished explaining the situation, she leaned forward and clarified how the law worked in our state.
“The affair itself will not automatically dictate child custody arrangements or financial division,” Sophia explained clearly. “What truly matters to the court is clear evidence of marital spending, established parenting schedules, joint assets, and anything that directly impacts Leo’s overall welfare.”
“What should I be doing right now to protect my son?” I asked anxiously.
“Document absolutely everything you can find,” Sophia instructed firmly. “Do not delete any existing files, but make sure you do not illegally hack into any private accounts that you are not legally authorized to view.”
I followed her legal advice strictly and avoided hacking into any of Brandon’s personal passwords. I did not even need to resort to anything tricky, because we owned a shared desktop computer in the home office that Brandon regularly used. He had left his main airline email account and personal messaging apps fully synced to the desktop system. Apparently, once a man decides inside his head that his marriage is already over, he becomes remarkably careless with his digital footprint.
I easily found months of detailed email records showing hotel reservations, expensive restaurant charges, private photo exchanges, and discussions regarding Laila’s pregnancy progress. I even located a digital copy of a formal prenatal paternity test that they had completed weeks prior. I gathered every single file that I was legally allowed to access on our shared computer and immediately forwarded the documentation to Sophia.
Two days later, Brandon came back to the house while Leo was away at school to pack up his personal belongings. He loaded two large leather suitcases with his clothing while I stood silently in the bedroom doorway watching him pack.
“I am going to stay over at Laila’s apartment for the time being,” Brandon announced without looking directly at me.
“Okay,” I replied simply, keeping my voice completely emotionless.
Brandon stopped folding his shirts and looked up at me with a surprised expression on his face. Perhaps he had expected me to cry, scream, or beg him to stay and fix our broken marriage. I did neither of those things, but instead I asked him one direct question.
“Do you ever plan on having a real, honest conversation with your son about what you did?” I asked flatly.
Brandon looked down at the floor carpet and rubbed the back of his neck nervously.
“I honestly haven’t figured that part out yet,” Brandon muttered softly.
That short, cowardly answer told me far more about his true character than the entire affair had revealed.
Part 9
The official divorce proceedings took almost nine exhausting months to complete. It was a long period filled with endless legal emails, detailed financial disclosure forms, property appraisals, tense mediation sessions, rising attorney fees, and endless arguments over holiday visitation schedules. We were forced to sell our family home because neither of us could comfortably afford to buy out the other person’s half of the property equity. The money from the sale was divided according to our final settlement agreement, along with our joint savings accounts and shared retirement assets.
At first, I was terrified about my financial future because I was not traditionally employed at a corporate office. I am a professional artist, and for many years people had treated my career like a cute little hobby simply because I worked out of our home dining room. But it was never just a hobby. I regularly sold original painted canvases, accepted private client commissions, licensed several design patterns to commercial brands, and consistently saved and invested my earnings over the years. I was certainly not wealthy, but I was far from helpless.
The family court awarded primary physical custody of Leo to me. Brandon received scheduled parenting time under a standard visitation arrangement, which eventually included overnight stays once Leo felt more comfortable spending extended time around his father. I never tried to manipulate Leo or keep him away from his dad, because despite his deep anger, Leo still loved his father very much. I realized those two complex emotions could exist side by side inside a child’s heart, so I trained myself to remain civil and polite during every drop off.
Laila and I will never be friends, and I highly doubt we will ever even like each other as human beings. But she is going to be a permanent part of my son’s life because Brandon chose her, and because Leo now has a baby half sibling. I flatly refuse to force my young son to carry my personal bitterness around for the rest of his life.
A few months after the divorce decree became final, Leo and I moved into a sunlit three bedroom apartment across town. We finished setting up Leo’s new bedroom first so he would feel safe and settled in his new environment. The second bedroom became my primary sleeping space, and the third room became something I had dreamed of owning for many years. It became a real art studio with sturdy shelving for paints, a wide wooden drafting table, bright natural window light, and a real door that I could close whenever I was creating.
The very first night after I finished organizing my studio equipment, I stood right in the center of that quiet room and finally let myself cry deep tears. I was not crying because I missed Brandon or wanted my old life back. I cried because I finally understood just how much of my own identity, creative passion, and personal dreams I had folded away to fit inside my marriage. Brandon had not simply cheated on me with another woman, he had been actively constructing a brand new future while I was still faithfully living inside our old one. And somehow, he had actually expected me to step aside politely and watch him live it.
Part 10
I do not hate Brandon anymore, because most days I simply do not feel enough emotional energy toward him to waste it on hatred. Leo is doing much better in school now, though he still asks difficult questions about the past from time to time. Sometimes his questions are painful to hear, and sometimes they are nearly impossible to answer fully, but I answer whatever I can with complete honesty and care.
These days, Brandon and I mostly communicate through brief text messages about school schedules, doctor appointments, extracurricular soccer games, and weekend pickup times. They are very mundane, practical conversations, and I am deeply grateful for the calm safety of mundane routine now. I honestly do not know whether Brandon and Laila’s new relationship will endure over the long term, but I truly do not care either way. A relationship that was built on a foundation of secret lies is entirely theirs to manage and carry. My only job was figuring out how to rebuild a real life for my son after the one I believed in vanished into thin air at thirty thousand feet.
And I have successfully built that new life. It is certainly not a perfect life, but it is more than enough to keep us happy and secure.
The detailed airplane drawing that Leo made for his father that morning is still sitting safely inside my top desk drawer. He never ended up giving it to Brandon at the airport. Once, a few weeks ago, I asked Leo if he wanted me to throw the old paper drawing into the trash bin.
“No, Mom,” Leo said after thinking about it for a moment while shaking his head softly. “Maybe I will give it to Dad someday when I am older.”
So I kept the paper folded safely in my drawer. I think that simple choice reflects exactly where both Leo and I are in our recovery process right now. We are not pretending that the terrible betrayal never happened, and we are not pretending that it did not hurt us deeply. We are simply leaving a quiet room for someday, whatever that word eventually ends up meaning for our family. What I know for absolute certainty right now is that Leo and I are going to be completely okay.
