I’m 52. Married for 27 years. And yes — I’m in menopause. Pity wasn’t expected. Special treatment wasn’t expected either. What felt impossible to expect was my OWN HUSBAND turning it into a running joke. It began as “jokes.” “Careful, don’t trigger a hot flash!” “She forgot again — blame the hormones.” “Menopause brain strikes!” He would laugh. As if that made it acceptable. At first, it stayed at home. Then it moved outward. Dinners. BBQs. Friends over. I learned how to SMILE while shrinking inside. If you know, you know. Then came THE DINNER. My husband asked his boss to come over. Just him. He’s been chasing this promotion for over a YEAR and decided THIS dinner would “seal the deal.” He told me more than once: “Be on your best behavior.” “Try to look nice.” “And PLEASE don’t get emotional.” I cooked. Set the table. Put on a dress. At dinner, my husband went into full SHOWMAN MODE — loud, charming, talking over me, correcting me, interrupting as if I weren’t there. At one point, I stood to adjust the thermostat. He chuckled and casually said, “Sorry about that. She’s going through THE CHANGE. Menopause. Temperature issues.” I wanted the floor to OPEN UP and swallow me whole. His boss just WATCHED.
The rest of the night blurred. I cleared plates. Skipped dessert. Listened to my husband brag as if I were furniture. After his boss left, my husband was GLOWING. “See?” he said. “NAILED IT. Promotion’s finally happening.” I went to bed feeling like a complete joke.
The next morning, my phone rang. Unknown number. “Hi,” a man said calmly. “This is David. From last night.” My stomach DROPPED. “I’m calling you privately,” he said. “Your husband shouldn’t know.” I sat down. “It’s none of my business,” he continued. “But the way he treated you… that was UNACCEPTABLE.” I couldn’t even speak.
Then he said, real quiet: “I’ve been going through the same thing with my wife. And after seeing how he treated you, I realized I couldn’t stay silent any longer. I’m leaving him my wife… for you. I’m gay, and your husband is the man I’ve been waiting for for a long time.”
